The formula for 9mm single-stack compact pistols was established in the early 2000s and hasn't changed in a decade or more. The formula was simple: small guns that were easy to conceal and carry due to their small ammunition capacity. Eight rounds in the magazine was the accepted norm, and no one objected to the idea. None, that is, until the Sig Sauer P365 came along.

The Sig P365 received almost universal praise in early 2018. The P365 shares many of the design cues of the larger P320 semi-automatic pistol, the military's new standard service pistol, albeit smaller. It includes features such as an integrated fire control group that includes a trigger encased in a polymer grip module. This means it's easy to swap out one grip frame for another in a different size or color, making it easy to customize your gun to your liking.

The real game changer, however, is the P365's magazine and how it fits into the gun's frame. 10-round pistol magazines for compact handguns are nothing new. Smaller versions of larger handguns like the Glock 26 have used 10-round magazines for more than two decades. But the new thing is that you can fit 10 rounds in a gun that is just over an inch wide, and that's enough to wrap all your fingers. There are also 12 and 15 round magazines for the P365. That means this pistol has twice the capacity of some of the pistols in our compact 9mm pistol test.

This extra ammo capacity has some drawbacks. The P365 is very short, one of the shortest in our tests. But as you start adding more magazine capacity, that magazine length grows. It also increases the height of the gun. Gun height (the distance from the top of the slide to the bottom of the magazine) is important because it affects how easily the gun can be concealed. A longer gun will attach more to your waist, which in turn makes it harder to conceal.

A 12- or 15-round magazine for the Sig P365 can negate one of the main reasons for carrying a small 9mm, namely concealment. If your small 15-round pistol is as difficult to conceal as a larger 15-round pistol, why not carry a larger, easier-to-shoot rifle instead? I have to admit that this line of thinking is very important to me. This is why I recommend people carry their P365s with a ten-round magazine or an extra twelve-round magazine and have a 15-round magazine as a backup or backup magazine.

The gun is very small. It is one of the shortest and thinnest tests in our test. For some reason, the Sig P365 felt smaller in the hand than when I first got it, but it wasn't difficult to hold. The pistol grip follows the shape of your hand and swells towards the base. The grip also feels short, back to front, compared to other guns in this test. These two things work together to make the P365 easy to hold and shoot.

The rifle sights I shot had a large Day-Glo green circle on the front with a tritium dot in the center. This front sight is my favorite defense gun, especially with a blacked out rear sight like this one. The P365 has a built-in trigger safety to reduce the risk of accidental discharge. There are two other internal safeguards. Also, the version I tested had a manual safety lever. I aimed the gun and had no problem engaging the safety. This is something you want a manual safety for. If you're the type who needs to manually secure your gun, the safety on the P365 will work well for you.

At range, the comfortable grip and good trigger made the P365 a fun gun to shoot, even for long range matches. A small extension at the end of a standard 10-round magazine was enough to hold the weapon well. This, along with the gun's beautiful sights and excellent trigger, made it easy to turn in tight groups on demand. Speaking of which…

The P365 was one of the most accurate pistols in our test. If I have one complaint about this rifle, it's that the front sight is so wide that it comes very close to filling the gap in the rear sight. The large front sight post makes it easy to grip while aiming the rifle at the target. However, the small gap between the front sight post and the rear sight post makes it difficult to get a clear view. There is not enough space to easily judge eye alignment. This is why I have a narrower front sight on my pistols.

From the bench at 15 yards, the Sig Sauer P365 had balls less than three inches in diameter. We used three different types of 9mm cartridges to test the P365, as we did with all the other handguns in our roundup of the best small 9mm compact polymer pistols.

Sig Sauer is known for making reliable rifles, and the P365 we shot was no exception. There were some reports of early recoil problems with this rifle. Since then, the Sig has addressed these issues and has become one of the best selling handguns in America.

With an MSRP of $599, the Sig Sauer P365 is one of the more expensive pistols in our test. But it also has great features like a comfortable grip, an excellent trigger and excellent magazine capacity. This is the new standard in the compact concealable carry market and is a gun I recommend time and time again to anyone looking for a compact handgun for self defense. If you are looking for a weapon that can protect yourself and your loved ones inside and outside the home, you may want to consider purchasing a Sig Sauer P365.
