The SIG Sauer P320 is a modular semi-automatic pistol manufactured by SIG Sauer, Inc., the American subsidiary of SIG Sauer.

It is a further development of the SIG Sauer P250 with a firing mechanism instead of a double action only firing system. The P320 can be chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 10mm auto and is easily converted from one caliber to another; changing from .357 SIG to .40 S&W requires only one barrel change; changing between 9mm to .357 SIG or .40 S&W and vice versa is accomplished with a caliber conversion kit.

The P320 chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum was introduced to the North American market on January 15, 2014, followed by a compact .45 ACP model at SHOT in January 2015.

On January 19, 2017, it was announced that a modified version of the SIG Sauer P320 had won the US Army's XM17 Modular Handgun System competition. The full size model is known as the M17 and the compact portable model is known as the M18.

The P320 was designed to be operated with both hands, with a catch lever on either side of the slide and a magazine release that can be turned by the user, and all other controls are designed to be operated from either side. Firearms can be disassembled in the field without tools. In addition, the firearm can be discharged without pulling the trigger, an additional safety feature that prevents the weapon from being accidentally fired.

The U.S. Army's new pistol requirements include the idea that an existing pistol model will take precedence over a bid request for a modular pistol system known as the XM17 Procuremt. SIG Sauer submitted the P320 with a number of modifications and entered it into the XM17 Modular Handgun System competition.

On January 19, 2017, it was announced that the SIG Sauer P320 MHS variant had won the US Army's Modular Pistol System Trial. The P320 will be known in the US military as the M17 (full size) and M18 (compact). Although the pistol will remain chambered in 9×19mm Luger rather than a larger caliber, the contract allows the services to purchase the XM1152 Full Metal Jacket and SIG Sauer's proposed XM1153 special-purpose ammunition.

In May 2017, the Army announced that the first unit to receive the M17 would be the 101st Airborne Division by the end of the year. At the same time, the rest of the U.S. armed forces revealed that they also intended to receive the pistol, making it the standard sidearm for the U.S. military's tires. The services plan to purchase up to 421,000 weapons in total; 195,000 for the Army, 130,000 for the Air Force, 61,000 for the Navy (XM18 compact version only) and 35,000 for the Marines.

On November 17, 2017, Soldiers from the 101st Airborne received the first XM17 and XM18 pistols, with more than 2,000 pistols delivered. The XM17 has better accuracy and ergonomics and a tighter dispersion than the M9. It will also be issued more widely, issued to the heads of units and firefighting teams; while special forces would dual-arm all their members with a pistol and a rifle, previously junior leaders and regular infantry units were excluded from carrying sidearms, but the policy was changed to give them more choice and options in close combat situations. All military units are expected to replace the M9 with the M17 within a decade.

Early production models of the P320 were found to have a "drop safety" problem where the firearm was dropped at a certain angle, which could cause this. SIG Sauer has since redesigned the P320 to be drop-safe and offers a voluntary upgrade program for early P320s.

Despite its initial problems, the P320 has proven to be an extremely reliable pistol for civilian, police, and military use. Many police departments in the United States and around the world have begun issuing P320s to their officers.

About 400 P320 pistols were purchased for Canada's Joint Task Force 2 (JTF-2) in 2019, but they were recalled and the earlier P226 pistols (also made by SIG Sauer) were returned after misfiring during shot and killed a soldier. in training in November 2020; JTF-2 was the only Canadian military unit to use the P320.

In June 2021, a technical investigation found that the misfire was caused by "partial pressure on the trigger from a foreign object combined with the simultaneous movement of the slide […] which allowed the round to be fired while the gun was still fired. lined with the sleeve", as the use of a cartridge case designed for another weapon contributed to this; the P320 itself was not to blame nor any problems with how it was procured by Canadian defense officials (as questions were raised as to whether those officials were aware of the list's safety issues). However the weapon will remain in storage for a third party security assessment.

The safety assessment and other procedures related to the misfire were completed by June 2022, with a decision to redeploy the P320 towards D month.

The XCompact size grip module is the smallest grip module SIG currently has, as they have not yet released an X-series sub-compact grip module.

Released in late July/early August 2019, the XFIVE Legion is considered the flagship of the P320 platform, bringing additional weight and features. The TXG grip module has the tungsten directly embedded in the polymer along with an attached magazine well. It comes standard with Hning aluminum base pads and a skeletonized flat trigger. The full 9mm slide features lighting notches at the top to reduce weight and aid recoil. Also, the optics are ready by removing the backplate assembly. The optics cutout is the Delta Point / Romeo 1 Pro profile, but will allow for more optics via adapter plates. .

The SIG P320-XTMAX is a 2022 X-series auto chambered 10mm version of the X-series P320. It features an X-series grip module, bull barrel, X-series flat trigger, and a nitrone-treated stainless steel slide with a cutout for installing target optics. The capacity of the magazine is 15 rounds. Weighs 33 oz (936 grams), has a 5" (127mm) barrel, 8.5" (216mm) overall length, 5.6" (142mm) overall height, 1.3" (33mm) overall width and a sight radius of 6.8 inches (173 mm).

The SIG P320MAX is a sportier version of the P320 designed in 2021 for competitive shooters. Equipped with ROMEO3 MAX sights and a TXG tungsten heavy grip module, the gun weighs 43.5 oz (1.23 kilograms), has a 5 inch (130 mm) matching barrel and an overall length of 8.5 inches (220 mm).

In late July 2017, the Dallas, Texas Police Department asked all personnel to suspend the P320 and conduct an investigation.

There were concerns that the firearm could discharge if it fell and the rear of the slide hit the ground at a 33-degree angle. The problem is said to be related to the weight of the trigger; some triggers were heavy, so they kept going mainly due to inertia after the gun hit the ground. Internet publications such as TheTruthAboutGuns.com have conducted independent tests that appear to confirm possible drop fires (at a rate of 40 percent).
