Sig 226 Review - Very few handguns have the remarkable reputation for reliability that the SIG P226 enjoys. The pistol saw extensive service in police and military roles.

GIS may not be for everyone, but its reliability and accuracy cannot be faulted. The weapon has proven itself. The P226 was designed for military use and met stringent requirements.

Sig 226 Review

After 35 years of continuous service—if you count the original P220—the P226 emerged from combat and US service with an unblemished record.

Review: Sig P226 Stainless Semi Auto Pistol

The gun pictured has maybe 10,000 rounds through the frame, cut and barrel and has had several springs and magazines replaced. Most SIG guns are nitrous.

This SIG stainless steel sliding version is very desirable. It's not exactly a compact handgun, but with the Galco Stow-N-Go Holster, the pistol can be concealed under clothing.

This pistol is more compact than some service pistols. The barrel is 4.4 inches long and the gun is 7.7 inches overall and the slide is 1.5 inches. It weighs 34 ounces unloaded.

The SIG P226 isn't light on the hip, but it's manageable. This is a nice homemade weapon. The pistol pictured is chambered for a 9mm Luger. It was offered in .357 SIG and .40 S&W.

Modern versions have light rails. I don't need a rail for concealed carry. Good for home defense, so new handguns are better for most of us, no surprises there.

The SIG P226 pistol has a long double trigger pull. The trigger is softer than others. This is called double action because the trigger does two things.

He cocks the cock and drops the hammer. The trigger pushes the pull rod which contacts the hammer. The hammer is pressed against the hammer spring, breaking the gun and firing.

Sig 226 Review

The slide recoils and cocks the hammer for an action shot. Single action firing does one thing, pulling the trigger releases the hammer. Both of these stimulus measures must be understood.

There is no mechanical safety. There is also a firing pin block that prevents the pin from moving unless the trigger is fully depressed. Double trigger and firing pin block are both safety features.

The only controls are decocker, slide bolt and magazine release. After the pistol is fired in single-action firing, the decocker can be pressed to lower the hammer without touching the trigger.

All controls are in positive operation. The firing pin block holds the firing pin in place. The firing pin can only move when the trigger is pulled all the way down.

This is such a great feature that many manufacturers have incorporated some sort of firing pin block into their handguns to stay competitive.

The gun has a steel block in an aluminum frame that limits wear when the slide and steel barrel contact the frame.

It's not a perfect gun, but it's a very good gun. The P228 is easier to hide. It is simply a compact P226. The frame may be a little wide for some hands.

My hands are average, so I installed Hogue grips with good results. It should be noted that some shooters use a sliding bolt when shooting. The result is that the slide does not lock on the last stroke.

Sig 226 Review

The Hogue rubber grips pictured practically eliminate this problem. The first DA shot from the pistol must be mastered. For some shooters, it takes longer.

Tfb Review: Sig Sauer P226 Elite

If you have a choice, get a SIG with a short factory reset trigger. This allows faster trigger feedback and much harder operation.

The Gray Guns unit is top notch and mounts in my personal P226. I recommend this setup for all SIG P series guns.

I pulled out the SIG and some Mec-Gar magazines to familiarize myself with the gun after a long time in the vault.

Remember to load it for a few rounds, tap the back of the magazine on a hard surface or the heel of a boot to seat the rings, then finish loading.

This is an aid to reliable operation with a double column pistol magazine. The Horandy XTP is one of the most accurate and reliable downloads I have used.

The load is very accurate. The GIS hits the target quickly and with proper technique, the trigger action is smooth and provides excellent hit probability. The meeting with GIS was enjoyable.

I also shot a few shots from a standard hand using the FMJ Hornady 124 grain load and enough Titegroup powder for 1140 fps. This is a well designed bullet that still feeds well and offers good accuracy.

In the 115-grain XTP, the balance between expansion and penetration is important in self-defense. Extreme Terminal Performance XTP is one of the best choices for potential damage.

An Old Dog With New Tricks

At 25 yards, firing from a standing trench position, a five-shot group with the FMJ practice load settled two inches apart.

The SIG P series are all winners, but the P226 is perhaps the best service pistol in the line.

It's worth the price. Guns aren't cheap, but most lifetime investments aren't cheap, and this is a lifetime investment.

DOJ announces new law to crack down on stabilizer straps, attachments used to convert pistols into short-barreled shotguns January 13, 2023 I recently received a used SIG Sauer P226 from a friend for review. I retrieve it in my gun holster. The gun is chambered in .40 S&W and is in very good condition considering its high firing and carrying capacity. The P226 is one of those classic pistols that has a great reputation. It always seems to work and build when needed, to abuse a quote, like the M1 Abrams tank. Needless to say, they are popular in both .40 S&W and other calibers (.22 LR, .357 Sig and 9mm). We look at the background of the gun and its modifications and then continue with the specifications and features. We'll take a quick look at the .40 S&W cartridge and talk about firing the rifle, and then wrap it up. Lets start...

Sig 226 Review

The P226 was designed and manufactured to participate in the US Army's XM9 service pistol trials in 1984. The pistol was based on the SIG Sauer P220, a single-battery service pistol developed by two companies: Switzerland's Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) and Germany's J.P. Sauer & Sohn. This pistol was released in 1975. The P220 itself was a modification of the Peter-Browning design used in the P210. The locked breech of the P220 is different from the P210 - developed and proprietary by SIG Sauer. The P220 has become a very popular weapon, especially among law enforcement. So it's no surprise that its stablemate, the P226, is also popular. This includes its compact version, the P229.

The P220 was originally sold in the United States by Browning as the Browning Double Action (BDA) pistol. It was the first SIG Sauer pistol sold in the United States. It sold very well and was eventually imported and sold under the SIG banner as the SIG Sauer P226. I remember when the BDA gun came out. It did not match the weapons that Browning was selling at the time, such as their famous rifles and shotguns. The Hay Power was the main handgun they sold, so when a very modern looking pistol with the Browning logo on it, many shooters took notice of the shelves. It looked very impressive, a quality item. This weapon was popular and often received good reviews. It filled a niche in the market for a double action/single action 9mm pistol that was very good and reliable. This was at a time when some of the other Wonder Nines were of questionable quality in terms of materials and construction. But, Browning... who can argue with that name?

Pistol trials were organized by the US Army in 1984 to replace the standard 1911 and other handguns in the arsenals of the various service branches. Interestingly, only two pistols passed the rigorous tests – the overall winner, the Beretta P92F and the SIG Sauer P226. (I had forgotten
