Sig Slx 556 - Model AR, Editorial, NFA / Suppression / Class III, Burst, Silenced Saturday No Burst, No Comments
Good morning everyone and welcome back to TFB Silencer Saturday brought to you by YHM R9 suppressor manufacturer Yankee Hill Machine. I want to thank Austin for his wonderful review last week of the heavy duty belt-feed penalty-proof B&T RBS suppressor while I was away for work. Meanwhile, a new SIG SLX 5.56 QD rifle suppressor arrived from the factory for review. How is it different from the SIG SLH models we've reviewed in the past, and should you invest in a model for your AR-15 or SIG MCX? Let's see.

The new SIG suppressors are made by additive manufacturing (3D printing) and come in two designs: SLH and SLX. What is the biggest difference between SIG SLH and SIG SLX Suppressors?

For a purely supersonic bullet like the 5.56, the multi-flow fuel design of the SLX models will help in cycle, rate of fire and reduced fuel consumption. Let's face it, the 5.56 AR-15 will never sound confident - so it's a smart choice to focus on gas flow and recoil reduction.
Each of the two models has subclasses indicating the caliber, mounting system, and type of metal used (inconel steel alloy or titanium alloy). All are available in black and some are available in FDE.
At the risk of being labeled an absolute SIG chili, my favorite semi-auto platform is the MCX. The SIG MCX provides a compact PDW that is accurate and reliable as well as being an excellent suppressor host with an adjustable gas system. Unfortunately, there is no 5.56 MCX or higher to test the SLX556-QD. However, SIG was kind enough to lend me a Switchback M400 pistol to pair with the new silencers.
The SIG Flip Knife is not an AR-15 I would pick off the shelf and buy on my own, but it is very impressive. Lightweight, compact, affordable, all-round controls are aimed at making this a useful farm/farm weapon. It's not the MCX, but it definitely punches above its weight. As proof, I will take this for myself.

SIG SAUER is proud to present the new SLX and SLH suppressor series. Both the SLX and SLH were developed to meet the demands of the US military and are designed to deliver superior performance.
The SLX series rifles feature the new Clutch-LOK QD mounting system which is easy to use, repeatable and extremely durable. The internal multi-flow path in SLX suppressors allows gas to be exhausted at a faster rate than conventional baffle style suppressors. This results in 70-80% less toxic fumes flowing from the ejection hole into the shooter's face. The SLX series is a performance based suppressor designed for use with supersonic ammunition and is ideal for users focused on flash reduction and lower toxic fumes. The new SLX low-tox suppressor offers a superior shooting experience unlike any other suppressor.
The SLX's low resistance multi-flow internal path discharges gas at a faster rate than conventional chambers. The SLX has 70-80% less PPM than conventional suppressors.
The SLH and SLX suppressors all come with the new Clutch-LOK QD mounting system and muzzle brake mount. The braking portion of the assembly is timed independently of the muzzle device fixed in the muzzle threads and conical surface. I wasn't a fan of this device in the last review, but now that I've ridden it multiple times, it's growing on me. For simplicity, I still prefer a flash concealer on most semi-automatic short-barreled firearms.

Additive manufacturing provides several advantages over traditional metalworking. Internal geometries can be more complex and efficient, with increased strength (no failed welds) and potential weight savings at the top of the list. One area that did not impress me about the SIG SLX 5.56 QD was its weight. At about 20 ounces, the AR-15 is in the "almost heavy" category of suppressors. On a short barrel like the M400 Switchblade this is not a problem, but extend it to a 16-inch barrel and you will feel it.
My next concern with the SIG SLX is its price. An MSRP of $1500 is in the upper range for AR-15 suppressors and may keep most of you on edge. Additive manufacturing is expensive and there is no way for now. To be successful, print suppressors must offer additional benefits to attract buyers. Multi-flow geometry is one of the biggest advantages of this advanced manufacturing process.
I experienced none of the usual gas recoil, gas in the face, or toxic gas that comes with many top-shelf and direct impact AR-15 suppressor configurations. This rifle rotates smoothly and reliably. As we know, the 5.56 semi-auto will never be considered quiet by any measure, but the SIG SLX does well, cutting the Flip M400 down to bearable levels. Don't forget your hearing protection.
Price and weight. These are my two potential criticisms of the SLX556 QD. Outside of those two categories, this is a well made and "quiet" 5.56 suppressor. The multi-flow design does its job very well, keeping backpressure and gas blowback at the lowest possible level. SIG has done a great job with the new suppressor lines, now we have to finish the review of all three boxes with some fully automated testing. Yes, I will take the video.
